Memmo Alfama Hotel In Lisbon, Portugal

I decided to take my wife away for her birthday for a few days to get some winter sunshine and stumbled upon the Memmo Alfama hotel on Mr and Mrs Smith.

One of the attractions that drew me towards the Memmo Alfama hotel is it’s a stone throw away from the São Jorge Castle and gorgeous views out to the River Tagus.

It was previously 3 buildings that has been converted into 1 big building (a kiln from the old bakery has been converted into a mini library).

Memmo Alfama has created a relaxed, stylish and a must see terraced pool bar with amazing views that make this Lisbon townhouse a must visit.

ROOM

I had read from other reviews online that the rooms at the Memmo Alfama were really small so I wasn’t expecting it to be particularly spacious.

What they lack in size, they make up in style and comfort.

The bed was really comfortable. My only dissapointment was we had been given 2 single beds pushed together. This is not unusal in a hotel, but they had not put a matress topper on top or given us bedding for a double bed. My wife and I had our own single beds with a single duvet each. We had’nt noticed until we went to bed and during the night I felt like I was going to fall down the middle!

To their credit, the hotel did rectify this the next morning once I had raised the issue with reception.

The bath and shower was absolutely AMAZING! The bath was massive and you could easily fit a family of 4 in it! The shower was in the ceiling, delivered alot of pressure considering the height and because of the size of the bath you did not need a tacky shower curtain.

The room had a small book shelf and desk with TV in front of the bed and a small cupboard with mini bar and safe.

Lastly you had a door leading out to your own little sunspot to catch those last few rays.

We stayed in room 5.

WIFI

The Wi-Fi is free at the Memmo Alfama hotel and you are given the password upon checking in.

The speed was really good through out the hotel and I easily uploaded videos and photos to share with friends on social media and uploaded a ton of files to Dropbox to clear some space on my phone.

FOOD & DRINK

BREAKFAST

Whilst staying at the Memmo Alfama we really enjoyed breakfast both mornings.

I was a bit sceptical at first as the breakfast room is quite small with 1 big table for everyone to share and about 8 smaller tables using the sofas and chairs (see photo below).

I am not the best in the morning and I really did’nt want to have small talk with people but we managed to get one of the smaller tables both mornings without a problem.

They offer a small hot breakfast with a choice of eggs, omlete, crepes, bacon, mushrooms and tomatoes but have a bigger choice of meats, cheeses, pastries, cereals, fruits etc from the cold buffet.

They also offer a range of teas, coffees, water and juices.

I would recommend trying the Portugese marmalade with some cheese as it is quite different from the British version you are used to.

Everything we ate was of a really high standard and it was quite refreshing not to have to much choice.

LUNCH/DINNER & DRINKS

Upstairs in the terraced bar they offer a small menu of food and drink.

We didn’t use it that much apart from to enjoy the views and soak up some sunshine in between tours as there was so many places in Lisbon to eat but we did enjoy our sweet potato chips, nachos and mini burger on our last day before returning home.

I managed to stick to not drinking and really liked their fresh lemonade juice.

The food is fantastic at Memmo Alfama but the real bonus is that it also comes with a amazing view looking out to the River Tagus.

FACILITIES

memmo alfama libary

The hotel has 44 rooms to choose from.

As you walk through reception you have a small lobby with the library on the right. A small dome shaped room where to bakery kiln used to be.

The next room you walk through is the breakfast room or lounge during the day. In here you will see some stairs that lead up to the bar/restaurant with spectacular views.

The pool is outside on the terrace along with numerous seats and sofa’s to lounge on.

It is quite small, but enough to dip in to cool off in the hot summer months but not big enough to swim in (We didn’t use it as it wasn’t warm enough).

STAFF

memmo alfama birthday surprise

The staff were really friendly and helpful. Nothing was to much trouble and were really helpful with directions to meeting points for our tours that we had booked.

I had told the hotel that my wife was celebrating her birthday the day we arrived.

They surprised her with a glass of fizz, chocolate cake and sang happy birthday to her, which was a really nice touch, so it is worth emailling ahead if your celebrating a birthday or special occassion during your stay at the Memmo Alfama.

TRAVEL

flying to lisbon with ryanair

I managed to get some cheap flights when the pilots were striking back in October and I think I paid £12.99 each way from Stansted airport.

Flight was only 2 and half hours, although we were delayed by 45 minutes because we had to wait for the plane to be defrosted?! Can’t really complain when you pay so little for the flights.

Once we arrived in Lisbon, we jumped into a taxi straight to hotel.

The hotel had said to expect to pay around 20 Euros but both journeys to and from the airport cost around 15 euros.

WEATHER

Considering we went at the end of January the weather was pretty kind to us. When we arrived it was a balmy 18 degrees, quite a significant difference to the minus 3 degrees we had left back in the UK.

Warm enough for shorts and t-shirts but not warm enough for the locals who were wearing winter jackets and gloves!

You can expect it go much warmer in the summer months and locals said they get very little rain in Lisbon.

CONCLUSION

Memmo Alfama is a excellent choice and offers superb value for money.

It is situated in a very useful location for tourists, a short drive from the airport and tucked away on a side road so you are not disturbed by the traffic.

What the Memmo Alfama is really brilliant at is providing excellent views of Lisbon in style.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

  • Memmo Alfama is a short walk away from the Lisbon city centre. Your only around a 10 minute walk away from some of Lisbon’s biggest tourist attractions.
  • You can get a tuk tuk to and from the hotel to most places in the city for just 10 euros. Make sure you agree a price before you leave.
  • The hotel didn’nt mention this until we arrived but it does offer a free walking tour to show you some of the attractions near the hotel.

BOOKING

mr and mrs smith extra

I booked via Mr and Mrs Smith after reading some great reviews and it cost around 150 euros per night.

By booking with through Mr and Mrs Smith you got some traditional custard tarts and a small bottle of Portugese wine upon arrival in our room as a extra for free.

I’ve never been to Portgual but reading this has made me not only want to visit but to stay in this beautiful hotel. You have shared a beautiful experience and it has encouraged my adventurous side! I feel a trip coming on soon! It was good to know about winter visiting as most reviews concentrate on summer holidays, which I rarely take.

      Enjoy the journey!
